What is Pyrite?

Pyrite, an Iron Sulphide, Hardness 6 to 6.5, cubic crystal system, bright metallic lustre, conchoidal fracture.

The name Pyrite means "stone which strikes fire", and this mineral certainly strikes fire in many peoples hearts.  This beautiful mineral is so reflective that in ancient cultures large examples were used as mirrors, it is easy to see why so many people get confused with this glittering crystal and gold. Pyrite is not only lustrous to behold, it also naturally forms in a cubic formation, which makes this one of natures most interesting minerals.
