What is Howlite?

Howlite is a natural white opaque crystal, a Borate mineral, also known as Magnesite. It is part of the monoclinic crystal system and forms in irregular nodules, which often look like a cauliflower!

Hardness 3 to 3.5, sub-vitreous lustre and irregular cleavage (making carving more difficult). The naturally white mineral often contains natural grey/black marble like veins of the surrounding minerals, and can be porous so we do not recommend water cleansing your Howlite.
